Barnston Island again at risk to be pulled from ALR

There could be another attempt to yank Barnston Island out of the Agricultural Land Reserve.

New Westminster Coun. Chuck Puchmayr says private interests have bought up the land and evicted many of the tenants.

“There is a real neglect going on there. The Barnston island property is so close to the bypass at the South Fraser Perimeter Road onto 176th. It is only a few hundred meters away. A small bridge to replace a seven-minute ferry crossing and taking it out of the ALR is all that separates a huge future opportunity.”

Puchmayr says if the land is removed, the island would be opened up for industry and shipping.

He says he opposes the move, noting a previous attempt in 2004 met with stiff resistance from residents in Surrey.
