BC Ferries wracked up a $ 16 million is losses in the last fiscal year but the company president is promising smooth sailing in the years ahead.
Mike Corrigan says the loss could have been worse but for some cost cutting.
“In reality it’s actually quite a good news story, we had budgeted almost a $ 20 million loss at the beginning of the year.”
Vehicle traffic was at its lowest level in 13 years, but Corrigan says the company should be back in the black in two years now that the province is going to allow service cuts.
Meanwhile NDP critic Gary Coons blames the liberal government for the company’s troubles.
“what we’re seeing is the end result of the coastal ferry act and the BC Liberals’ attack on the marine highway.”
Coons says skyrocketing fares are squarely to blame for falling ridership.
