BC selling off Liquor Distribution Branch

The Provincial Government has now officially hung the For Sale sign on the Liquor Distribution Branch.

Victoria has issued a request for proposals for a private operator to take over liquor distribution in BC.

Minister responsible, Rich Coleman, says companies have 60 days to make a bid, “Then they’ll come back with the selected, maybe a short-short list of one or two and they’ll have to go through that and decide which one is the best deal for government.”

But NDP critic Shane Simpson says BC will likely just end up with a private monopoly instead of a public one, “What that means, I can assure you, is that people who are looking to buy a bottle of wine, buy a case of beer, buy spirits, will pay more.”

Simpson says the LDB should stay in public hands.
