Canadian actors’ union has a message for Oscar nominees

Ahead of tonight’s Academy Awards Ceremony, the union representing more than 20-thousand Canadian performers (ACTRA,) is calling on nominees to toss out an item they may find in one of their gift bags.

The item is tickets for the BC-based Rocky Mountaineer tourist train, which were selected to be part of certain gift bags at oscar-related events.

“There’s no way of knowing whether the nominees actually get it, whether they actually use it, but they’re able to put their names into ads, and into press releases and things that aren’t sanctioned at all by the Academy Awards from what I understand,” said ACTRA Vice President Alvin Sanders.

Unionized workers with Rocky Mountaineer have been locked out since last June.

Sanders points out the film industry is also highly unionized, and many wouldn’t cross the pickets, if they knew Rocky Mountaineer’s situation.
