Chief Chu “disturbed” by video of Boyd shooting

Vancouver Police Chief Jim Chu has broken his silence about new evidence in the fatal shooting of a mentally ill man nearly five years ago.

Chu says he was disturbed by video of Paul Boyd being shot while he’s crawling and unarmed.

Chu is breaking with policy to post details of the events on the VPD website.

He’s also welcoming another outside investigation, calling this tragedy a defining moment for the VPD.

Boyd was killed days after Chu was named Chief Constable.

The officer involved has never been charged.

Chu says Constable Lee Chipperfield is still on active duty.

Chu says he hasn’t been able to respond before today because he’s been away at a policing conference in Dallas, Texas.
