Children’s Advocate with iNet request

BC’s Child and Youth Advocate says it’s time for Internet Service Providers and social media companies  protect kids from the dark side of the internet.

Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond says social media-savvy teens, especially those at risk can quickly become targets for online predators.

Turpel-Lafond says parents need to get with it and educate themselves, and thats not all, “We also need to look hard at internet service providers; those who not only manufacture the technology but the software. Where is there social responsibility? Where is their pro-social committment to educate and keep kids safe? I am not saying we can shut the internet down by any means, but where are they? They are only too happy to sell the products, are they going to be there to help us promote safety?”

She says teens and pre-teens can be exposed to more violence and pornography on the internet in ten minutes than their parents did in a lifetime.
