Mayors in Metro Vancouver are looking at alternatives to property tax to raise funds after a regional symposium on finances
Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie says the current property tax system as a funding base is inflexable and archaic.
But when asked what model municipalities might go with as an alternative to property taxes, Brodie said, “What we do know is that the current system of having the municipalities receiving eight cents on the tax dollar simply is not an equitable arrangement and we need to change that kind of formula. Where we would end up is a little hard to say but certainly there are lots of approaches we can make.”
Brodie says Mayors want better planning and communication with other levels of government to get on the same page with priorities and funding options.
