Council reviews homeless count

Homelessness in Vancouver is up, slightly, compared with last year.

The number of homeless in Vancouver is pegged at 1602.

Those numbers are up one percent over the numbers from 2011.

Part of the reason for the increase, the experts say, is a change in welfare benefits.

Vancouver council has heard the number of homeless women is up over last year.

39 percent of the homeless are female.

The average age of a homeless person is 38.

There is also a high number of aboriginal people who are living on the street.

The numbers are the result of the homeless count carried out in March.
