Coyotes suspected in Metro Vancouver cat mutilations

The mystery of over two dozen cat mutilations in Metro Vancouver has been solved.

Over the past year, 26 mutilated cats have been found, mostly in Maple Ridge, but also in Langley and Port Coquitlam.

Despite initially believing the cat attacks were the result of human involvement, the BC SPCA’s Marcie Moriarty says expert necropsies conducted since may show a different cause.

She says despite strong indicators suggesting human involvement, the animals were the victims of  a coyote, or some other type of predator.

Moriarty says the initial belief the mutilaitons were caused by a human were the result of initial veterinary and pathology reports, as well as the questionable placement of cat remains.

The RCMP continue to investigate the real possibility a person moved cat bodies around, and the BC SPCA is still urging area residents to keep their pets inside.
