Disaster at sea narrowly averted

A family of four is lucky to be alive after their pleasure boat caught fire late Wednesday afternoon.

The 36 foot boat caught fire about 5:30 pm just off Siwash Rock in Stanley Park.

2 adults and 2 kids were on board along with two large propane tanks and nearly 400 litres of fuel. The fear of an explosion kept fire fighters at a distance and the city’s fireboat was called in to fight the  blaze.

The family was retrieved from the water by the Coast Guard.

One of the adults suffered mild smoke inhalation.

The boat burned to the water line.

As yet, still no word on just what caused the fire.
