Dispatchers warn of overcooked turkey dangers

Metro Vancouver 9-1-1 dispatchers have a unique addition to a list of household fire hazards.

They’re warning people to be careful of kitchen fires caused by overcooked turkeys.

Dispatcher Corey Kelso says it may sound like a joke, but it’s actually the leading cause of spikes in 9-1-1 calls over the holidays.

He says there are ways to prevent turkey-related fires.

“Watch when you’re basting. If you’re using a shallow tinfoil pan to make sure that you don’t poke a hole into the pan. I know a lot of people use butter and wine when they’re cooking their turkeys and that can hit the element causing a fire.”

Kelso also recommends cleaning the oven before putting in the bird.
