Environmentalists take VanCity to task over investments

A non-profit environmental group says the President of Vancity has said the credit union will likely divest from Enbridge if the Northern Gateway Pipeline project goes forward.

Director of Wildcoast.ca, Zoe Blunt says Vancity is taking a resolution to Enbridge’s Annual General Meeting Wednesday, instructing the company to withdraw its pipeline application.

Wildcoast.ca had given a letter to Vancity saying its supporters will close accounts with the credit union if the pipeline goes ahead and Vancity hasn’t divested by the end of this year, “It’s come to our attention that Vancity, the socially responsible credit union, has Enbridge stocks in its mutual funds that they’re calling socially-responsible investments, and this had a lot of people very upset.”

The proposed pipeline would ship bitumen from Alberta to Kitimat to be taken to Asia.
