Exclusive: Transit Police unhappy with new fare collection bylaw

Transit Police are threatening not to write any tickets after taking a close look at a new bylaw that came into effect this week.

The Fare Collection Bylaw allows Transit Security – along with Transit Police – to issue fare infraction tickets.

The trouble is however according to Transit Police officers who want to remain unnamed for fear of retribution for speaking out to the media is that if somebody refuses to provide identification after not producing proof of a transit fare, officers are required to allow them to walk away without issuing a ticket.

Front line officers say it’s hard to believe both Translink and the Province would put together legislation with such a glaring gap.

Translink Spokesperson Jason Martin had this response,

“this system, ah, i’m not shocked.” (Martin)  I”m sorry??? (reporter)  “I don’t understand your question (Martin).

Martin does say Translink has identified some concerns raised by Transit Police and they’re working with the Province to address the issues.
