Families deserve a break, says BCFed

Wouldn’t you rather be at home?

Today could have very well been Family Day in B.C., a much-deserved statutory holiday for working families during that gruelling stretch between New Years and Easter without a single weekday off.

The holiday was a promise of Premier Christy Clark during her Liberal leadership bid, but instating it in time for 2012 was deemed unrealistic.

B.C. Federation of Labour president Jim Sinclair is putting the pressure back on the government to ensure British Columbians get a break in 2013.

“It’s critical to people’s sanity,” said Sinclair, adding that Ontario, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Alberta give a February long-weekend to its residents. “People are working more and more but at the end of the day, time off is not a negative for the economy. It boosts productivity, lets people spend time with their families and they’re out spending money and putting it back into the economy.”
Sinclair said he would hold Clark to her word.

“There is no guarantee,” he said. “She said she will bring it in but what if the economy isn’t in better shape next year? Who knows what the excuse will be. We’ve been fighting for this for five years and will continue to fight.”
