The federal government is taking steps to impose back-to-work legislation against striking CP Rail workers.
The announcement from Labour Minister Lisa Raitt comes hours after picket lines went up across the country.
She’s urging both sides to keep talking and she’s not saying when the legislation could be tabled, but she insists they’re ready to act “if necessary.”
Freight service across the country has been halted by 4,500 workers represented by the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference.
Union leaders in Vancouver say they’re not prepared to comment before they hold a meeting at 1 p.m.
Raitt claims a prolonged strike could cost the economy $ 540 million a week.
