Firebug sought in Kitsilano

No one was hurt and the damage was minimal, but emergency crews in Vancouver have issued a warning about a firebug in Kitsilano.

The arsons were committed in three alleyways overnight.

Fire captain Gabe Roder says the first was reported at twenty to 11.

“Two dumpsters that were set in the south alley of Broadway at Balaclava.  Those fires caused some slight damage to the rear of a building and about ten to 11, a little bit later on, a port-a-potty was set ablaze at 19th and Highbury.  Fortunately, the damage was limited to that port-a-potty.  About 4:30 this morning, an older model vehicle was ignited at Fifth and Highbury.”

Investigators believe all the fires may have been set by one suspect.

Vancouver Police Constable Brian Montague says no arrests have been made, but he’s pleading with witnesses to contact police, no matter how insignificant they believe their information may be.

“A lot of people hesitate to call 911 if they see something suspicious.  We would much rather attend and deal with a suspicious circumstance, than have to investigate a crime after it occurs.”

Last year, 151 arsons were recorded in Vancouver, accounting for 32 per cent of all fire investigations and causing more than seven million dollars worth of damage.
