First comes the design then the keel…

A North Vancouver shipbuilder can start designing vessels on a massive government contract as early as next year, after the Prime Minister paid a visit to the company to shore up terms.

Speaking to a thousand-strong crowd in a shipyard hangar, Harper says the Government and Seaspan Marine have formally set out terms for the company’s eight billion dollar contract to build non-combat vessels, “This agreement clears the way for Seaspan to receive initial orders for at least seven ships for the Canadian Coast Guard and for the Royal Canadian Navy. That means jobs and growth here in North Vancouver and in many other communities for many years to come”

Harper says the government’s national ship building strategy will rebuild the industry in Canada over the next 30 years. He says the first steps now for Seaspan will be to firm up the legal details and get started on planning contracts for individual ships.
