Higher alcohol prices could reduce consumption

A new report from the Victoria-based Centre for Addictions Research shows raising the minimum price for strong alcoholic drinks could have a big impact on public health.

Dr. Tim Stockwell points to rules in Saskatchewan where minimum prices vary depending on the strength of the drink, “It targets particularly, the heavier, high-risk drinkers who are more likely to experience these illnesses or suffer those kinds of problems. We have other research underway which is showing that this measure will reduce both alcohol-related deaths and admissions to hospital.”

The report also shows a big drop in sales for harder liquor.

A 10-percent increase in the minimum price resulted in a 22-percent reduction in consumption.
