Hospital ‘redoubling’ efforts to control outbreak

B.C.’s health minister is reassuring the public that “everything possible that can be done is being done” to address the C. difficile infection outbreak at Burnaby General Hospital.

Health Minister Mike de Jong, who on Monday met up with officials representing Fraser Health and Burnaby Hospital, blamed the hospital’s aging design and lack of enough bathrooms for the problem.

“If you have four patients in a room as opposed to one patient or two patients, they’re sharing the same bathroom. That is a challenge,” he said.

But de Jong said hospital staff are “redoubling their efforts” to ensure that infection rates of C. difficile, which senior doctors say have led to 84 deaths over the last two and a half years, continue to drop.

“I’m here today to assure the public that they can receive top-notch care at Burnaby Hospital,” he said.
