Hundreds expected for 2nd annual “SlutWalk”

Vancouver’s second annual “SlutWalk” is happening Saturday, starting at the Art Gallery at 2pm.

Hundreds are expected for speeches and the march.

Organizer Rachel Malek says the message to end slut-shaming is still strong.

“We want to make sure that clothing, somebody’s behaviour, the way somebody’s dressed, somebody’s profession is not an excuse for rape, abuse or violence.”

Malek says Vancouver police responded to last year’s SlutWalk with their ‘Don’t Be That Guy’ campaign, aimed at young men to reduce sexual violence.

The first SlutWalk took place in Toronto, sparked by a police officer who told university students they could avoid being assaulted if they did not dress like ‘sluts.’

Similar events are now held worldwide to reclaim that word.
