Independent Investigations office up and running

It’s a first for this province.

The Provincial Independent Investigations Office has opened its doors for business.

The office will investigate police incidents that end in fatalities or serious injury.

Richard Rosenthal is the director:

“I am required as the chief civilian director at the conclusion of any investigation to determine whether an officer may have committed a criminal offence. If I believe the officer has committed a criminal offence I will send the case to crown. Crown retains it’s independence in making it’s own decision as to whether criminal charges should be laid.”

The office stems from one of the recommendations from the public inquiry into the death of Robert Dziekanski at Vancouver Airport after he was stunned with an RCMP.
