A coroner’s inquest into the death of a Kamloops man, shot by the RCMP at a gas station two years ago, is set to start Monday in that city.
50-year-old Wilbert Bartley was shot by plainclothes officers in July 2010.
He had rammed his Toyota 4Runner into their unmarked police van, then drove at the officers, who then shot at him through the windshield.
The SUV kept going and crashed into a coffee shop.
An autopsy later found a combination of drugs and alcohol in his system — which an expert says could cause paranoia or psychosis.
The mounties involved have been cleared of wrongdoing.
The inquest allows a jury to make recommendations aimed at preventing similar deaths.
It’s set to run until Friday.
