Judgment day looms for street vendors

They came, they served, they wait.

Twenty-five hopefuls arrived at Vancouver Community College on Friday with one goal in mind:
seduce a panel of judges with succulent tastes that will earn them one of 12 precious permits to be the downtown core’s newest street food vendor.

“There are so many great vendors, there’s so much competition,” said Krissy Seymour, of Pig on the Street. “It’s going to be a tough decision for the judges. We all basically have a 50 per cent chance, the winners will have an amazingly positive impact on the city.

The pork sandwiches are commonplace in her homeland of England — “basically our version of the hotdog” — but desperately lacking in Seymour’s adopted home of Vancouver so she decided to fill that void herself.

The judges that sampled all 25 vendors’ creations on Friday included nutritionists, chefs, food critics, a city councillor and VCC’s head of culinary arts.

For a city that really only offered hot dogs as street food a couple years ago, Seymour says Vancouver has come a long way.

“Vancouver is such a food savvy city,” she said. “People may not always have time to sit down for a lunch, but they still expect a great culinary experience every day. So much has changed in the last couple of years, there’s so much diversity now.”

The 12 winners of street vendor permits will be announced next month.
