It looks like the Department of Fisheries and Oceans will consult on closing the Kitsilano Coast Guard Base, well after making the actual decision.
A few weeks ago minister Keith Ashfield told CKNW, when pressed, his mind was made up on the issue.
“So thats a no”
“More or less I would say that that would be what I am saying right now, that is right.”
But CKNW has learned the minister will hold a roundtable tomorrow morning with stakeholders in Vancouver to “…understand their concerns.”
However 35 year coast guard member and former Kits base commander Fred Moxey has not been invited.
At last word, Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson had not received an invite.
Robertson has been vocal in his opposition to the marine service cuts.
The NDP’s west coast fisheries and oceans critic says the sudden roundtable on coast guard seems pointless.
Fin Donnelly questions the point of having the consultation if veteran coast guard members are being excluded.
