More evidence of police tunnel vision at Missing Women inquiry

B.C.’s Missing Women Inquiry has heard more evidence of tunnel vision being a problem in the search for serial killer Robert Pickton during the late 1990s.

Retired Vancouver police detective Mark Chernoff is backing up earlier testimony that fellow VPD officers, Doug Fell and Mark Wolthers, were convinced another suspect from Alberta was the killer.

Chernoff: “They were extremely busy with their file.”

Lawyer: “(Barry)Niedermeyer.”

Chernoff: “Niedermeyer, yeah, I mean that was their focus and that was clear. I don’t even know if they ever asked to look at my binder. I don’t ever remember them taking any real interest in the Pickton thing – which is not really uncommon.”

Earlier this week, Fell and Wolthers rejected suggestions they ignored tips about Pickton.
