More Translink turmoil

Transit Police officers say they’re “incensed” with a new bylaw that came into effect this week. In fact, they’re threatening not to write any more tickets until Translink and the Province sort it all out.

Transit cops say a loophole in the new fare collection bylaw is the problem.

It turns out, if somebody refuses to provide identification after not producing proof of a transit fare, officers are required to allow that person to walk away without issuing a ticket.

Translink’s Bob Paddon says they’re working with the Province to correct the situation, “When we first heard from police officers as to their concerns about some of the complexities of this law and what may be some problems with it, we reacted, we’re in touch with the Government of BC, and we’re trying to fix this for ’em.”

Jordan Bateman is with the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, “Translink and Transit Police executives, they’re setting new standards for incompetency with this one. I mean, it’s unfathomable that after all these months of preparing for this blitz, they didn’t have their legal ducks in a row. It’s just incompetency pure and simple.”

As the new bylaw stands right now it also means Transit Police can’t check people for outstanding warrants.
