NEW WESTMINSTER, B.C. – A Delta, B.C. police officer says an off-duty Mountie told her he had two shots of vodka after a deadly accident to “calm his nerves.”
Const. Sarah Swallow was testifying in the obstruction of justice trial of Corp. Monty Robinson, who’s accused in a crash in which his Jeep struck and killed 21-year-old Orion Hutchinson, who was riding a motorcycle through an intersection in Delta in October, 2008.
Swallow says Robinson wasn’t at the accident scene when she arrived, but he appeared a few minutes later.
She says Robinson told her he took his two children home and while he was there he had a couple of shots of vodka for his nerves.
Swallow says Robinson smelled of alcohol, was slurring his words and appeared to have had more to drink than the amount he admitted to.
In his opening statement, Crown prosecutor Kris Pechet told the trial Robinson tried to use his police training to escape a drunk driving conviction when he claimed to have had the alcohol after the crash.
