Elections B.C. is asking for over a million bucks to prepare for an as yet hypothetical senate election.
Chief electoral officer Keith Archer wants $ 1.07-million to get B.C. ready to elect senators.
Such an election hasn’t been called, and even if it was, wouldn’t even be legal as things stand — as NDP attorney-general critic Leonard Krog points out.
“What’s the wisdom of putting money in to study and consider the cost of holding a senate election, the results of which will not be constitutionally or legally binding on the prime minister?”
Archer brought forward the plan to examine a potential election ahead of B.C. senator Gerry St. Germain’s retirement in November.
