A familiar name in Vancouver civic politics has officially joined the BC Liberals as a candidate in one of the city’s ridings.
Former Mayor Sam Sullivan will run for the party in Vancouver-False Creek after nabbing 273 votes out of a total of 517.
However, there are about 18-hundred BC Liberal members in the riding, so why the low turn out, “Yeah, most of them were signed up two years ago and this is a riding that moves a lot but we figure about almost 30 to 40-percent actually moved out of the riding in that time.”
Sullivan says he is looking forward to taking on Matt Toner who is the NDP candidate.
“Well I am looking forward to debating him and I don’t know much about him he is an unknown so I am looking forward to larning more about him.”
For his part Toner says unlike his Sullivan he knows lots about his opponent, including the Olympic Village fiasco.
“He was kind of a divisive figure, kind of an autocratic figure, I think he is a smart enough guy don’t get me wrong but I think that style of politics is kind of tired right now. We need something different.”
Sullivan beat out former MLA Lorne Mayencourt and, in distant third, Bryan Fixter for the nomination.
The vote however, was held outside the riding in a hotel in the nearby riding of Vancouver-West End.
