They’re battered, bruised and blistered, but Val Skelly said she and 39 other women are not going to stop until they cross-check cystic fibrosis for good.
Skelly organized the Longest Game for CF in an effort to raise money and awareness for Cystic Fibrosis Canada, while attempting to set the Guinness World Record for the longest continuous ice hockey game. The puck dropped Friday at the Burnaby 8-Rinks and will continue until Sept. 5.
“We may be hurting right now, but people with CF are hurting everyday,” Skelly said. “This is 10 days of hell for us and hopefully it leads to a better life for them.”
The women have been through emotional highs and lows, she added, but a special visit boosted their spirits.
“A father brought his three kids on the bench,” Skelly said. “And all three of them had CF. One of the girls wrote ‘Thank you teams for helping me to have a better life.’ We all saw that and we all started crying. That’s why we’re here.”
Volunteer Timothy Barrington said he’s impressed with what the women are trying to accomplish.
“Some of these women (have families) and to put their lives on hold and put their bodies through this much pain is an amazing feat,” he said.
When Metro stopped by yesterday, Team White was leading the high-scoring affair 259-160.
