A Vancouver city councillor is standing up for local restaurants as they deal with increased competitioni the form of the popular food cart program.
NPA councillor George Affleck plans to table a motion next week to have staff look at changes to the food cart program to help ease restaurant owners’ concerns.
This, he says, especially since the city plans to add more carts over the next few years.
Affleck says he was approached by several restaurant owners over the holidays who complained the carts were taking away their customers.
“The restaurant industry employs thousands of people. It generates significant tax revenue for the city, as well as overall revenue for businesses.”
He agrees the food carts have been successful, but says there needs to be a better balance between them and restaurants.
