The leader of the provincial Green party is urging the Premier and the leader of the provincial NDP to pressure the feds on a new investment treaty with China.
Jane Sterk says the deal, called FIPA, will kick in at months end with no debate in the house of commons and no say from the provinces.
Sterk says the deal may trump provincial rights and leave Canadian taxpayers on the hook for lost chinese investment money.
“Including the Northern Gateway pipeline but other resource development issues and asking them if they could not use their influence to try and pursuade the Prime Minister that this agreement should be subject to open debate and that it should be open to input from the provinces.”
Sterk says once the deal kicks in at months end Canada is locked in for the next 15-years.
“If it goes to arbitration those arbitrations are done out of sight there is no judicial recourse if the decision goes against the Canadian government so the taxpayers of Canada are going to be on the hook potentially for paying China if they deem that somehow they have lost money as a result of decisions made by the Canadian government.”
She has written a letter to Premier Christy Clark and NDP leader Adrian Dix urging action in the issue.
Sterk would like the Premier to recall the legislature for an emergency debate on the pact.
