Purdy has tough words for Toews

The corrections chair of the BC Government Employees’ Union says Public Safety minister Vic Toews is a little early in praising his own tough on crime agenda.
Dean Purdy says downloading onto the provinces may be behind a drop in numbers for federal inmates.

“The corrections branch has said the capacity inside our provincial jails is going to rise until the year 2020 and you couple that with impacts on the two bills they have said they have come out with some documentation that the inmate population will increase by 473 inmates based in the federal crime bills alone.”

Purdy says the nine provincial prisons in BC are already roughly 170% over capacity.
He says the rise in numbers coupled with a more violent gang affiliated inmate is causing an increase in assaults on guards.
