RCMP to be more accountable under new B.C. contract: minister

B.C.’s justice minister says Mounties who cross the line will be held accountable under the province’s new contract with the RCMP.

Shirley Bond says Mounties will be held to account by B.C. new independent investigation office.

“Absolutely, and that’s another partnership. Obviously the federal government has made it clear that they approve of British Columbia’s direction in terms of an independent investigation office.”

RCMP Assistant Commissioner Craig Callens says the force is all for answering to the office in charge of investigating police complaints.

“We have advocated for it. We promote it. And we have sought it out.”

The province hired U.S. police expert Richard Rosenthal to head up the new office, which will be open this year.
