Replacing bridge could cost a billion dollars

It’ll be four years before any construction starts, but business leaders being consulted about the future of the Pattullo Bridge have now been told the bridge must be replaced and that could cost a billion dollars.

Translink’s Sany Zein says the best option for the 75-year old bridge linking Surrey with New Westminster is a six-lane replacement.

“We have to look at different ways to procure and finance the bridge, so we have four years of pretty intense work before there are shovels in the ground.”

But opponents, including New Westminster city councillor Jaimie McEvoy, say the bridge may not be needed at all.

“You know, we had a fire at the bridge. The bridge was closed for about a week and a half and the first few days we had traffic chaos, but after that, the traffic started moving again.”

Translink is reporting the region’s population is slated to grow at least 70 per cent over the next 30 years.
