Road-rage trial continues

The ex-common-law spouse of a man charged in the March 2008 hit-and-run death of 21-year-old Silas O’Brien says the accused was home and in his hot tub in the hours following the incident.

Jill Suter, who was separated from, but still lived with, Brent Parent during the time of the accident   testified on the second day of the high-profile road-rage trial that she was awoken by Parent and his brother, Lloyd Teneycke, between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m. on March 13, 2008.

Suter, who was in a relationship with Parent for 14 years, said she yelled out the window for the pair to quiet down. It was after her third attempt that the two decided to call it a night at around 5 a.m.

She woke up at 7 a.m., made coffee, went to the living room and watched TV. She described how she saw the news about the collision that happened on 16th Avenue and heard that police were looking for a white Ford F-150.

During defence lawyer Vincent Michaels’ cross-examination, Suter claimed that Teneycke, who was sleeping on the couch, woke up and watched the same newscast with her.

Suter claimed Teneycke, who Crown counsel alleges was with Parent during the time of the incident, had his “hands on his head” and was saying “Oh my God, oh my God.”

She said she told Parent about the newscast a few minutes later and claimed he appeared to be in a state of shock.

“He didn’t say anything, but he looked sick and white and just stood there,” Suter testified.

Teneycke will be taking the stand next. The Crown’s case is expected to conclude this week, followed by the defence’s case next week.

Parent is expected to take the stand later in the trial.
