Social media sites wrongly ID murder suspect

SURREY, B.C. – Police say people using social media have wrongly identified a suspect in the stabbing death of an 18-year-old boy in Surrey, B.C. last weekend.

Sgt. Jennifer Pound of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team says the man named on media sites in the killing of Jamie Kehoe began getting death threats and went to police, who have ruled him out as a suspect.

She says members of the public must let investigators conduct a thorough, impartial investigation without having people singled out as being guilty.

Pound also warns that uttering threats is a criminal offence and they could hurt the investigation.

Police are looking for a tall black man in the death of Kehoe, who was stabbed while trying to break up a fight on a bus Saturday night.

Relatives and friends of Kehoe attended a candlelight vigil for the boy Tuesday night near the scene of the attack.
