Stanley Cup Riot trial update

An RCMP interrogation video entered as evidence at the trial of accused Stanley Cup rioter Spencer Kirkwood shows he appeared remorseful, but insisted didn’t remember taking part in the riot.

An RCMP interrogator’s interview video taped with Kirkwood has now been entered as evidence at his trial.

In it, Kirkwood tells the interrogator he doesn’t need a lawyer, proceeds to explain he was excited about watching the Stanley Cup final the day of the riot, but he was drinking heavily at a Yaletown party and doesn’t remember taking part in the riot.

He says he doesn’t remember how he got home and he had 16 missed calls from his worried mother the next morning.

He also tells the interrogator a friend alerted him about the Facebook video and he cried when he watched it on his phone.

He says he freaked out and called his father, telling him “I think I’m in trouble.”

He posted an apology promising to turn himself in, saying “I love this city” and he was disgusted with himself.

The interrogator asked if he wanted to say anything else and he said “I’m sorry, that’s not me” and when he first saw the video he thought he was going to jail.
