Surrey proceeds with poverty reduction plan

The City of Surrey is moving forward in reducing poverty by implementing an ambitious plan.

Councillor Judy Villeneuve says nearly 71,000 surrey residents are below the poverty line – almost one in five.

“We looked at areas that we could probably make a difference which were around transportation, housing, income and support services. If those areas were inhanced then we would be able to bring some people up above the poverty line.”

Councillor Villeneuve adds many low income residents are using their entire income to pay for necessities like rent and food.

The poverty reduction plan was passed last July.
