The City of Surrey plans to launch a new strategy to reduce poverty on Monday.
Councillor Judy Villeneuve says the comprehensive plan aims to break the cycle of poverty for many different pockets around the city – from children and families to seniors – and not focus on just a certain demographic.
The strategy outlines policies the city and non-profit groups can use in four areas: housing, transportation, income and support.
“We know it’s going to be very difficult to eradicate all poverty, although as one of the wealthiest countries in the world, we should have that as a major goal. But we do know it’s possible to make a difference in people’s lives and that’s our goal.”
Villeneuve says the plan is the result of more than two years of meetings, analyzing census data and consultations.
