Taxpayers group launches billboard campaign against MP pensions

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation has launched a national campaign on what it calls “lavish” pensions for Members of Parliament.

B.C. Director Jordan Bateman says the group has set up five billboards in cities across Canada, including here in Vancouver, that invite people to visit a website to sign petitions and email party leaders to deal with the matter.

“Our point has always been, look, if you’re going to tinker with the Old Age Security, if you’re going to work on public-sector pensions – all, I think, important reforms that I think need to be done – you need to deal with your own pension plan first in order to have the moral authority to do that.”

Speaking with CKNW’s Simi Sara, Bateman says MPs contribute about $ 11,000 a year for six years, while the average citizen would have to pay $ 129,000 to get the same payout benefit.

He says that’s because MP pensions aren’t invested into to the market.
