The NDP are blaming government cutbacks for an outbreak of C- Difficile bacteria at Royal Columbian Hospital.
Opposition leader Adrian Dix notes it’s the second outbreak in Metro Vancouver this year, he blames cutbacks and the privatization of cleaning services.
Dix said “one of the problems is that the government hasn’t had the fundamentals right on this question in health care for a long time, we’re at the end of an experiment of what happens when you reduce and disrespect cleaning in hospitals, and it’s not a very positive result.”
Health Minister Mike De Jong says the Fraser Health Authority has commissioned what it calls a “deep clean” of hospitals, and insists the number of C-Difficile infections in BC is declining.
But NDP Health critic Mike Farnworth says the so called “deep clean” actually failed a cleaning audit as well and had to be done for a second time at Burnaby’s hospital.
