The NDP are worried time is running out for proper debate on a bill, which has yet to be tabled, over the exit of the HST and return of the PST.
Attorney General critic Leonard Krog says the bill must be dealt with by months end, but has yet to be tabled.
He says “The HST has to be dealt with in the legislature that is a requirement it has to be dealt with before May 31st when the house rises so that will be a fairly major bill to transition us back to the old PST is going to take a massive piece of legislation and clearly the government is way behind.”
Krog says he is worried the Bill won’t get the time needed for debate.
He said “What we do know is with three weeks of legislative sitting left many bills before the house some of them controversial and no legislation introduced on the HST PST that this is going to mean, I think, that the government will bring in closure again as it has done with many other bills.”
Krog says the bill will be massive and very complex
He said “It is not clear yet whether the government is truly going to return to the old PST with its exemptions or do somethign different.”
As for the NDP will they want the same old PST or something revamped?
Krog replied “At this stage I mean the opposition’s not in a posiiton to say whether we want the PST back with all its old glory we may in fact want further exemptions. We may want tax incentives or further tax..I mean thats…thats ..hard to say we campaigned on the basis on returning to the PST as it existed that is still the position.”
