The Robson Street oasis disappears for winter

A recommendation is going before Vancouver Council on the future of a popular stretch of Robson Street.

City Hall staff is recommending the 800-block Robson Street behind the Art Gallery be re-opened to traffic but closed again next summer.

Staff’s been looking at a permanent public plaza in that block after the popularity of the street’s closure over the summer.

A survey found the public would like to have a permanent year-round square there. However, at the same time, the city feels it will take time to develop.

There’s also the problem of re-routed buses.

For now, staff is calling on Council to re-open the block December 1st to vehicle traffic and prepare for a summer closure again next year.
