With the Canadian Wildlife Federation marking Canadian Wildlife Week, more focus is being placed on the problem of wildlife crimes.
SFU forensic entomologist Gail Anderson says by some estimates, illegally-taken wildlife has a worldwide trade of more than 10-billion dollars, “We’re talking about large numbers of people taking large numbers of wildlife for a variety of reasons, as a trophy animal, but often for medicinal markets and things like that.”
Anderson says her work adds to the prosecution of those caught, although she adds, the Courts have had a reputation of slim punishments.
