Transit cops need to spread out

Transit Police say it’s a ‘matter of focus’ that most of their officers patrol Skytrain and Canada Line and aren’t often on buses.

Inspector David Hansen says Transit Police are on the buses depending on the need, “We do attend to bus routes and specific buses and specific routes when issues arise and trends are identified and they are brought to our attention.”

Bus Drivers Union President Don MacLeod says having police on board the buses would be a good deterrent for fare evasion and violence against drivers, “There is a high concentration on Canada Line on Skytrain Line that seems to be where the majority of the force concentrates themselves most of our members have not seen them on our buses.”

Fare evasion on the buses totalled 11-million-dollars over three years; money that could buy 20 new buses.
