Transit Police audit released

An audit of Transit Police is painting a rosy picture…
The review was done by the Vancouver Police Department – and makes 30 recommendations.
When it comes to violent crime, the review cites a 6.8% drop between 2008 and 2010.
Tt also finds fare enforcement reached an all-time high in the second quarter of last year.
Chief Officer Neil Dubord is happy with the results.

“They would come in and look at our administration area, our operational area, our finance area and ensure that it was operating within best practice of other police agencies in the lower mainland, and i think in fact, this operational review did show that.”

While fare enforcement may be up, a recent CKNW investigation revealed Translink had no way of enforcing fines.

But Jordan Bateman with the Canadian Taxpayers’ Federation says the report doesn’t tell the whole story.

“What I’m most disapointed about is that the VPD audit did not look at alternative delivery models. They felt that the transit police idea was set in stone, so they didn’t look at things like could an integrated unit deliver service more cheaply… and better service.”

Bateman says he’s also curious how the force will adapt once fare gates are installed – and two-thirds of Transit Police files are gone.
