UBC to host Davis Cup matches

Vancouver will play host to the Davis Cup first-round tie between Canada and France next year, Tennis Canada announced yesterday.

The 110-year-old competition will take place indoors Feb. 10-12 at UBC’s Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre. The matchup will be the first ever tennis event held at the sports centre.

“The stage has been set to have a big impact on the game, on tennis in general, on the next generation, and this is something to really look forward to,” said Martin Laurendeau, Miele Canadian Davis Cup team captain.

“We’ve had big success here. We know we can play really good tennis here…. We know the venue here will be perfect for us.”

Canada will take on France in a best-of-five match format — the first day will consist of singles matches, followed by doubles matches and reverse singles.

Vasek Pospisil, a professional tennis player from Vancouver, is confident that playing in front of a home crowd will give the Canadian team a significant advantage over their French competitors.

“I know from past experiences playing there that the Vancouver fans are passionate about supporting their own,” said Pospisil via video conference from Illinois. “We are hoping that those large and noisy crowds come out to cheer us on in February.”
