Unattended campfire causes brush fire in West Vancouver

Fire officials say it could have been much worse.

A small brush fire was caused by an unattended campfire in the Eagleridge Bluffs area in West Vancouver Sunday evening.

Assistant Fire Chief Martin Ernst says the fire spread about 10 metres up a hillside.

It was extinguished quickly.

“Even though right now we’re in a low fire danger rating, certain microclimates can be a lot drier than others, and if we were a few weeks forward now into later June or July, this could have been almost catastrophic.”

Campfires are illegal in the city.

Ernst is reminding anyone cooking outdoors to use a camp stove–he says a fire is too risky.
