Vancouver impresario David Y.H. Lui dies

VANCOUVER – David Y.H. Lui, a prominent member of Vancouver’s arts community, has died.

Lui, who was 67, was considered a cultural icon in B.C. and co-founded Ballet British Columbia.

He had most recently been working with the National Ballet of Cuba, which is scheduled to perform in Vancouver next February.

Jay Rankin, the executive director of Ballet B.C., says Lui kick started the appreciation of dance and ballet in Vancouver in the 1970s and will be greatly missed.

Lui worked with many dance companies in Western Canada, was a founder of several major B.C. arts groups and was a member of the Order of Canada for his work in the arts.

Rankin says Lui had a history of heart problems but he isn’t sure what caused his death on Wednesday.
